FIGS was established in 1982 by a group of Wake County residents to address a serious problem: the need for prescription medicines for low-income people, in particular the elderly and the chronically ill. These were people who had neither medical insurance nor money to buy medicine from their own pocket.

The FIGS program is coordinated with area doctors and pharmacists. Each month, the FIGS Board of Directors appropriates donated funds to purchase prescription medicines for qualified individuals through two Urban Ministries of Wake County programs. First, Crisis Support staff interview applicants and identify eligible recipients based on socio-economic needs. Staff also find a convenient pharmacy to fill the prescriptions at a reasonable price and submit the bill to FIGS for payment from your contributions. Second, part of the FIGS monthly allocation goes to Urban Ministries Open Door Clinic to purchase medications needed by patients at the clinic, most of whom have multiple chronic illnesses. The Open Door Clinic pharmacy purchases and dispenses medicines for much less than the price charged by regular pharmacies, allowing your donated monies to serve many more patients than would otherwise be possible.
